What is School Direct?

School Direct

Do you want to inspire young children to love learning?

In a few months, you could be changing lives of your children as a trainee teacher!

School Direct is a school-led teacher training course that gives you, high-quality graduates, a one year school based programme, run in conjunction with The University of Warwick, which allows you to be a part of the teaching team within a school from day one.

All our placement schools are in and around the Derby and Derbyshire areas.  All the training days take place locally at Harrington Nursery School, Derby and University of Warwick Teaching Fellows come to us.  What more could you want, training with one of the best Universities in the world in your local area.

This Postgraduate Certificate in Education; early years school direct programme leads to qualified teacher status and together with 60 masters credits. This programme focuses on 2-7 year olds and early years is the foundation and learning.

The programme will prepare you fully for the practical demands of teaching, learning from experienced outstanding teachers and immediately put your new skills into practice.

Our innovative and integrated programme is at the cutting edge of teacher training. Designed in collaboration with The University of Warwick, which has a long established reputation, we aim to produce outstanding reflective practitioners who can provide creative, challenging and purposeful teaching and learning.

Working together we have integrated all aspects of the course, sharing the development and teaching of the programme and guaranteeing access to outstanding expertise in a variety of areas.

We offer enhanced training for professional studies, building inclusive practitioners, skilled in Special Educational Needs, English as an additional language, behaviour for learning and closing the achievement gap.  We harness expertise from our strategic partners.

You will be in school from the first day of the school year so you will be treated like a member of staff and attend staff meetings and development days. In your school you will be assigned a mentor and you will be supervised by a professional mentor.  You will also be supported through visits from a University Link Tutor.

You will spend most of your school year in one host school, gradually increasing the amount of time spent in the role of a teacher, working closely with an experienced and skilled practitioner and mentor.

Then you will go onto another host school for a term for a second placement, this will be a different age group and a contrast to your first placement to gain further experience and opportunities.

Your training will take place every other week based at Harrington Nursery School.  During these unprecedented times, the training sessions may take place virtually rather than at Harrington Nursery School. This training can also be shaped around your needs and the programme can be added to throughout the year to ensure you are getting out of it and learning what you had hoped to.

There are no formal examinations.
