Staying Road Safe for Under 5s

1. Supervision is Key

Always supervise young children when near roads. Make sure they are within arm's reach and can’t wander off.

2. Teach Basic Road Safety Rules

Explain simple road safety rules to children, such as:

  • Stop at the curb.
  • Look left, right, and left again before crossing.
  • Never run onto the road.

3. Use Safe Crossing Points

Encourage children to use pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, or zebra crossings when available. Always model how to cross the road safely.

4. Hold Hands

Always hold hands with young children when walking near roads. This ensures they stay close and helps you keep them safe.

5. Stay Away from Vehicles

Teach children to stay a safe distance from parked cars and always be cautious around moving vehicles. Explain that they should never play in the road.

6. Use Proper Child Seats

When travelling in a car, ensure that children are in appropriate child seats that are suitable for their age and size. Follow local regulations for child car safety. If you do not have a suitable car seat for your child, speak to a member of the team who may be able to help you.

7. Create a Safety Routine

Make road safety a fun routine. Before stepping out, remind children of the safety rules and celebrate when they follow them correctly.

8. Educate on the Dangers of Distractions

Teach them the importance of paying attention and not being distracted by phones or toys when near roads.

9. Be a Role Model

Set a good example by following traffic rules yourself. Show children how to be responsible pedestrians whenever you are out together.

By instilling good habits and awareness about road safety from an early age, you can help keep young children safe as they explore the world around them.
